Make it cheffy

Brown the butter, and toast the flaxseed and wheat germ ahead of time

How

Cook the butter in a small saucepan over medium-low heat, swirling often, until it foams, turns golden brown, and smells nutty. Toast the flaxseed and wheat germ in a dry pan over medium heat, stirring, until fragrant.

Why

Both add a toasty, caramel depth that pairs perfectly with apples and cinnamon.

Swaps

  • Brown sugar → coconut sugar.
  • Maple syrup → honey.

Make ahead & storage

Make ahead

Mix the topping up to 2 days ahead and keep it in the fridge.

Storage

Cover and keep in the fridge up to 3-4 days. Reheat at 350°F for 10-15 minutes to re-crisp the top.
